The Last Thing She Remembers by J.S. Monroe

Ages 18+

Image result for the last thing she remembers

The main character doesn’t remember who she is, let alone her first name. She arrives at the train station and realizes her bag has been stolen – so she doesn’t have I.D. to help her. She does remember where she lives, however. She goes to her home, only to find a couple living there who say that it’s their home, and don’t recognize her either. Will she ever figure out who she is? This thriller gripped me from the first page to the last.

Love In English by Maria E. Andreu

Grades 9 – 12

The novel follows sixteen-year-old Ana who has just moved from Argentina for her junior year in high school. She’s a bright girl, but the language barrier proves to be difficult for her. She meets Americans at school, as well as other foreign students like herself in her ESL class, and begins to find her way. The author includes “#” symbols to indicate when English is spoken and Ana doesn’t understand what’s being said. This is brilliant, and gives the reader a real feel for what it’s like to not know what’s going on, and understand Ana on a different level.

The second book in the Amina’s Voice series begins as Amina is finishing her trip to Pakistan, and she’s excited to share her experiences with her friends once she returns back home. They don’t seem interested, however, and when she does a school project on Malala Yousafzai, her classmates focus on the negative parts of the story instead of seeing Pakistan for the beauty of it that is in Amina’s eyes.
